These guidelines have been developed by member companies of The Aluminum Association to help the aluminum industry achieve optimal recovery and recyclability of automotive aluminum scrap; to address the control of contaminants; and to identify the chemical composition of aluminum auto parts.
These guidelines are also intended to inform the automotive industry of significant issues affecting the recyclability of the aluminum they use.
The guidelines are divided into four sections. The first section is an Overview, and covers economic issues which govern the recycling of aluminum scrap, thereby affecting the value of scrap. Separation into alloy families is discussed in the second section. The third section deals with guidelines for Contaminants. Finally, the fourth section deals with Design for Recycling and expand on the advantages of separation versus shredding, dismantling issues, and separation of metals from non-metallics.
These guidelines are based on information believed to be reliable and are offered in good faith, but without guarantee. The conditions which exist in individual plants vary widely; thus, no uniform applicable standard exist for handing scrap aluminum. Independent discretion and expert judgment should always be exercised. Accordingly, neither The Aluminum Association nor its member companies make any warranty, expressed or implied, or assumes any responsibility or liability, whether based on warranty, contract negligence, strict liability, product liability or otherwise with respect to the information and recommendations contained herein.
