Experimental limit loads were determined for five 4-in. schedule 40 nominal size ANSI B16.9, A106 Grade B carbon steel tees loaded with either an in-plane or out-of-plane moment couple on the branch outlet. Two of the tees were full-outlet 4 X 4 in. tees with nominal branch dimensions of 4.5 in. OD and 0.237-in. wall thickness and three were reducing outlet 4 X 2 in. tees with nominal branch dimensions of 2.375 in. OD and 0.154 in. wall. Complete sets of outside diameter and wall thickness measurements throughout the body, as well as uniaxial stress-strain material properties, were obtained for each tee. Experimental load-displacement and moment-rotation curves obtained for each tee up to the point of fracture were used to determine the limit loads by four different methods. These included the tangent-intersection method, the plastic-modulus method, the three-delta method, and the plastic-load method. Results of the study showed that the branch moment capacity for all of the tees was substantially greater than the theoretical limit load of the equivalent nominal size straight pipe, with additional reserve margin against failure.
