The International Standard ISO 16645:2016 applies to medical linear electron accelerators with a rated energy of the beam between 4 MV up to 30 MV, including special installations such as a robotic arm, helical intensity modulated radiotherapy devices and dedicated devices for the intra operative radiotherapy (IORT) with electrons. The cyclotrons and the synchrotrons used for hadrontherapy are not considered. The radiation protection requirements and recommendations given in the ISO 16645: 2016 cover the aspects relating to regulations, shielding design goals and other design criteria. The part of the manufacturers, the role of the radiation protection officer or qualified experts and the interactions between stakeholders is also mentioned. The different types of Radiation around a linear electron accelerator, the shielding for conventional and special accelerators (including shielding materials and transmission values, calculations for various treatment room configurations, radiation influence on radiation protection) are discussed. The radiological monitoring (measurements) plays an important role in the ISO 16645:2016.
