The American Petroleum Institute (API) retained Clayton Environmental Consultants. Inc. to perform a gasoline vapor exposure assessment at six service stations (representing six different companies) selected by the API. The purpose of the study was to characterize the exposure of consumers to airborne gasoline components during self-serve fill-up operations. In addition to personal exposure assessment, air samples were collected at the station fenceline. Clayton also measured local meteorological data, recorded numerous operational parameters, and collected bulk samples of the various grades of gasoline at each station.<\/p>\n

Of the six service stations monitored, two are located in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, two are in Phoenix, Arizona, and the other two are in the Los Angeles, California area. Sampling at the stations was performed in the months of October and November, 1990. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) personnel concurrently conducted a study of gasoline vapor exposures of full service attendants.<\/p>\n
