The concepts of<br \/>\nsoft and hard oscillators are introduced and explained, and the<br \/>\npossibilities of across-wind, along-wind and torsional galloping<br \/>\nare discussed. Stall galloping, wake galloping and flutter as<br \/>\nseparate mechanisms are defined and briefly described. A method is<br \/>\nprovided for estimating the wind speed for the onset of galloping<br \/>\n(or the structural damping required to prevent galloping at a given<br \/>\nwind speed) for a single-degree-of-freedom system. A technique of<br \/>\napproximately determining the galloping onset wind speed and the<br \/>\nmaximum amplitude is suggested for force coefficient curves typical<br \/>\nof sharp-edged sections. Typical results for onset wind speed and<br \/>\nresponse are shown for typical force curves. The theoretical<br \/>\napproach used is fully explained and a worked example illustrates<br \/>\nits use.
