In many cases, information security may be a vital component of
\na general wideband data radio system. Several security services are
\npermitted for implementation in these systems. The services are
\nstandards options and they operate within the bounds of the
\ninterfaces defined for non-secure operation. This security overlay
\nmay be used to provide end-to-end security of information
\ntransferred across a general wideband data radio system or the
\nsecurity overlay may be used to just protect information across the
\nair interface. The purpose of this document is to define the
\nmeaning of these security services. The definition and detail of
\nhow security services are provided is outside the scope of this
\ndocument.<\/p>\n
A general wideband data radio communications system consists of
\nsubscriber units, base stations and other fixed equipment for
\nsingle-site to wide area operation and computer end host system
\nequipment. The subscriber units include portable radios for
\nhandheld operation and mobile radios for vehicular operation. The
\nbase stations are for geographically fixed installations. A
\nstandard should exist to describe any given specific instance of
\nsuch a general wideband data radio system. This document will refer
\nto such a specific instance of a general wideband data radio system
\nas defined by the TIA-902 series of standards.<\/p>\n
This document provides an overview of the security services
\navailable in wideband data radio systems. It provides the context
\nin which to understand when certain security services may be
\ndesired and gives a general high-level description of how they are
\nprovided. The purpose of security services is to neutralize
\ninformation security threats to a system. The nature of these
\nthreats is discussed in this document, and the security services to
\ncounter these threats are defined. In general, the subject of
\nsecurity includes encryption, and this topic is discussed in
\ngeneral terms to explain the different levels of encryption
\nalgorithms available within the standard, and their application to
\nsecurity services.<\/p>\n
In the context of this document, the specific security
\nrequirements are generalized into three security topics:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Confidentiality (also known as Privacy)<\/p>\n
\u2022 Authentication and Integrity<\/p>\n
\u2022 Key management<\/p>\n
These three categories correspond to the security services
\navailable to wideband data radio systems. This document does not
