This standard establishes transmission performance requirements
\nfor headset devices that function as a wideband digital wireline
\ntelephone. Transmission may be over any digital interface including
\nLocal or Wide Area Networks, Firewire\/IEEE Std 1394, Universal
\nSerial Bus (USB), public ISDN or digital over twisted pair wire.
\nThis includes TDM-based and packet-based (e.g. VoIP) telephones.
\nThese telephones may be connected through modems, voice gateways,
\nwireless access points, or PBXs, or they may be personal
\ncomputer-based telephones. Examples include, but are not limited
\nto: ISDN telephones, digital proprietary telephones, VoIP
\ntelephones (corded and cordless), softphones running on personal
\ncomputers, IEEE Std 802.11 telephones, USB telephony devices, DECT
\n(CAT-iq) telephones, Bluetooth\u00ae telephony devices, and HD (High
\nDefinition) voice telephony devices.<\/p>\n
Some telephone systems consist of a host (such as a laptop
\ncomputer) with an interface for a Universal Serial Bus (USB) or
\nBluetooth device. If the host device is assumed to have a 0 dB loss
\nplan in its default state, then the relevant clauses of this
\nstandard are directly applicable to the USB or Bluetooth device. If
\nthe host system provides gain or loss in the send path, receive
\npath, or both, then the relevant clauses of this standard apply to
\nthe composite system.<\/p>\n
The test measurement methods in this standard reference
\nprocedures in IEEE Std 269 and ITU-T Recommendations. Several
\nperformance measurement procedures are established, each of which
\nyields standardized measurement data that may be used for the
\ndetermination of compliance with this standard. Although this
\ndocument may reference specific procedures or test equipment, the
\nintent is not to be allinclusive. Any measurement procedure and
\nequipment that can result in an identical measurement is considered
\nvalid.<\/p>\n
